At local farmers markets, you can purchase an assortment of fruits like strawberries, oranges, apricots, grapefruits and persimmons. You will also find vegetables like peppers, squash and tomatoes this time of year. You can even find flowers, herbs and seeds from farmers to start your own garden. What’s in Season
During summer citrus like oranges, lemons, limes and grapefruits are at their peak. Most vegetables like beets, corn and peppers are in season in right now. Most produce is best eaten in three to five days and should be kept in the refrigerator while some veggies like onions, carrots, cabbage last for months. Kale and Carrot Salad
Ingredients:
1/4 cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil
2 tablespoons white wine vinegar
2 teaspoons honey
1 teaspoon dijon mustard
10 cups stemmed and torn kale
1 carrot, shredded
1 cup candied walnuts (optional)
Instructions:
In a large bowl, whisk oil, vinegar, honey and mustard. Add kale and carrot; toss and season. Let stand 10 minutes, toss again, then sprinkle with nuts.
What to Bring
Most vendors will offer you bags, but you should bring your own canvas or paper bags to cut down on plastic. Bring a backpack or a small cart to carry your food. Often the farmers market association will provide an ATM. While some vendors take credit cards, it’s best to bring cash. Some vendors will let you haggle on price, especially if you are cash-in-hand.
