1. Protect your Skin and Win
Too much exposure to the Sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays can cause premature aging, eye damage sunburn and skin cancer – the most common form of cancer that affects Americans causing nearly 10,000 deaths annually. Make sure to protect yourself with hats, appropriate clothes and sunscreen with at least an SPF of 30 to avoid skin damage, especially for infants and children.
2. Water, Water, Water
You should drink six to eight glasses of water a day and even more in the summer heat. Staying hydrated with water is one of the most important things to watch. Look out for dry mouth, dizziness and headache as they are all symptoms of being dehydrated. Try setting alarms on your phone to remind yourself to drink a glass of water.
3. Eat Well, Play Harder
Eating food rich in antioxidants, energy and hydration will help you feel great and do more of what you love this summer. Herbal ice teas, avocados, watermelon, antioxidant-packed tomatoes and blueberries all promote health.
4. No Summer Sick Days
Practice outdoor food safety and avoid illnesses like salmonella and ptomaine at your next picnic or BBQ by handling and storing food properly. Always wash your hands and keep food covered. Serve cold food in small portions and don’t allow hot food to stay out for longer than an hour. Keep foods containing dairy products (like potato salad) cool to avoid spoilage.
5. Healthy Back-to-School
Summer goes by fast and before you know it, it’s back to school time. Many schools won’t allow your child to enroll unless they are up-to-date on their immunizations and well-child exams. Make an appointment to bring your family in for a checkup to make sure they are healthy and ready to start the new school year.
